Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO for K mount
One of the most popular Sigma’s telephoto zoom lens - APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO - now available with Pentax K mount. “Macro” in its name means that it can focus on a subject as close as 100cm and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:3.5. Well, not the real macro, but could be pretty useful sometime.
The lens contains 18 elements in 15 groups and 9 diaphragm blades. Filter thread diameter is 77mm - not much for 18cm long 1380 grammes wide-aperture zoom. You can find some samples made with Canon and Nikon cameras on PBase.
Update: Sigma’s rep just confirmed my guess - Pentax version of 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APO will not have HSM (Hyper-sonic motor). But he (or she?) also said that “we can assure that the autofocus will be just as fast.”

Hopefully, once Pentax releases the DA* ultrasonic motor lenses, Sigma will be able to reverse-engineer that and add HSM to their Pentax-mount versions. I’m really interested in the 30mm f/1.4 HSM.

It’s quite possible. In any case, it will take at least a year before pentaxians will get HSM/USM enabled Sigma lenses.

Is the lens available to purchase anywhere? Price?

May be somewhere in Japan or Korea…
As for the price, C and N versions of this lens costs $920 for kit, including CirPol an UV filters, tripod and lens cleaning kit.

[…] The minimum focusing distance of the new lens measured at 95cm, which is 5 centimeters closer then the same range Sigma and the way shorter range Pentax DA* 50-135mm F2.8. Macro magnification rated 1:3.1 at the long end. […]

I ordered this lens from Henry’s Camera in Ontario back in May, when it said it was on order. I am now told that they will have stock of this lens in FEBRUARY of 2008!

Hmmm. . . Does this glass really exist? This is the email that I got from Sigma Japan yesterday:
Dear Mr. Charles,
Thank you very much for your e-mail message that we have received through
Sigma Corporation of America.
Presently, Pentax version of 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro lens is not available, however, we receive many requests from many potential customers, therefore, it would be possible to add this lens into our product line-up in the future. However, presently there is not a fixed schedule for production of Pentax fitting of 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG lens.

Well, now Sigma says they have a SIGMA 70-200MM F2.8 MACRO EX DG PENTAX lens. But still no sign of it in the wild.
I’m still not getting my hopes up.

I wonder how much Nikon and Canon are paying Sigma to delay release of there HSM lenses for Pentax. The major reason that so many people have left Pentax is the lack of lenses.
